Description
LSD is a popular psychedelic with a relatively long history of use and research, and as such is known to be relatively safe despite its extremely high potency. It is the archetypical psychedelic to which all others are compared, and remains in popular usage.

Detection Times
| Method | Detection Window |

Interactions
26 known interactions with other substances.
Tramadol is well known to lower seizure threshold and psychedelics also cause occasional seizures.
Cannabis has an unexpectedly strong and somewhat unpredictable synergy with psychedelics.
Stimulants increase anxiety levels and the risk of thought loops which can lead to negative experiences

Country Details Show 25 countries
DE Germany Illegal
Illegal. LSD is in Anlage I of the BtMG (non-prescribable narcotic).
Germany's threshold for aggravated LSD penalties (§29a BtMG) is just 6 mg of base LSD â equivalent to roughly 20â60 doses, making it easy to trigger severe charges.
CH Switzerland Illegal
Illegal controlled substance. Limited compassionate-use therapy exists.
Switzerland was the birthplace of LSD (Albert Hofmann, Sandoz, 1938). The Swiss government authorized individual compassionate-use LSD-assisted psychotherapy (Ausnahmebewilligung) for select patients with terminal illness.
NL Netherlands Illegal
List I (hard drug) under the Opiumwet.
LSD is classified as a List I (hard drug) substance in the Netherlands. Unlike psilocybin truffles, there is no legal loophole for LSD. 1P-LSD and other analogues occupied a grey area until specific scheduling.
GB United Kingdom Illegal
Class A controlled substance.
LSD has been Class A since the original Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The UK sentencing for LSD trafficking is based on the weight of the carrier (blotter paper), which has been widely criticized as disproportionate.
FR France Illegal
Illegal narcotic (stupéfiant).
France classifies LSD as a narcotic (stupéfiant). There are no medical or research exemptions actively in use.
BE Belgium Illegal
Illegal controlled substance.
Belgium prohibits LSD under its general drug law. No harm-reduction drug checking services operate legally (unlike the Netherlands or Austria).
PL Poland Illegal
Illegal psychotropic substance (Group I-P).
Poland classifies LSD in the most restricted psychotropic group with no medical or research provisions.
US United States Illegal
Schedule I controlled substance. No accepted medical use under federal law.
LSD is Schedule I federally. Oregon's Measure 109 (2020) did NOT include LSD. Some cities (Santa Cruz, Oakland, Seattle, Detroit) have deprioritized enforcement of psychedelics including LSD. Federal sentencing uses total weight including carrier medium.
CA Canada Illegal
Schedule III under CDSA. Illegal for all non-research purposes.
LSD is Schedule III in Canada (less severe than MDMA which is Schedule I). There are no medical-use exemptions, though research exemptions exist.
MX Mexico Illegal
Illegal controlled substance. Personal use threshold: 0.015 mg.
Mexico's personal-use threshold for LSD is 0.015 mg â far below a single standard dose (~100 ”g). This means even one dose technically exceeds the threshold, making the decriminalization effectively meaningless for LSD.
BR Brazil Illegal
Illegal. Listed in Portaria 344 (Lista F1).
Brazil's 2006 drug law removed imprisonment for personal use but provides no fixed quantity threshold for any drug. A judge decides if someone is a user or trafficker based on circumstances.
AR Argentina Illegal
Illegal controlled substance.
The 2009 Arriola Supreme Court ruling protects private personal drug use from criminal punishment but enforcement is inconsistent.
PE Peru Illegal
Illegal controlled substance. Personal use threshold: 0.02 mg.
Like Mexico, Peru's personal-use threshold for LSD (0.02 mg) is far below a single dose, making the exemption practically meaningless.
AU Australia Illegal
Illegal controlled substance.
LSD is fully illegal in Australia with no medical-use pathway. The TGA's 2023 psychedelic rescheduling applied only to psilocybin and MDMA (for PTSD), not LSD.
NZ New Zealand Illegal
Class A controlled drug â the most severe category.
New Zealand classifies LSD as Class A â the strictest category alongside methamphetamine and heroin. This is more severe than MDMA (Class B) or cannabis (Class C).
ZA South Africa Illegal
Banned substance (Schedule 7 + Drugs Act).
LSD is double-regulated in South Africa under both the Medicines Act (Schedule 7) and the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act.
IL Israel Illegal
Illegal dangerous drug.
LSD is prohibited as a dangerous drug in Israel. Unlike psilocybin and MDMA, there are no active clinical trials for LSD-assisted therapy in Israel.
JP Japan Illegal
Narcotic under the Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Law.
Japan classifies LSD as a narcotic. 1P-LSD and other analogues were separately banned as "designated substances" (æćźèŹç©).
SG Singapore Illegal
Class A controlled drug. Extremely severe penalties.
Singapore's zero-tolerance drug policy applies fully to LSD. Even trace amounts of LSD on blotter paper are weighed as the total material for sentencing.
AT Austria Decriminalized
Suchtgift (narcotic). Personal use redirected to health authorities under "Therapie statt Strafe".
Austria's harm-reduction framework applies. The "checkit!" service in Vienna also tests LSD blotters for identity and dose.
ES Spain Decriminalized
Private personal use is an administrative offense.
Spain treats LSD as a "hard drug" (sustancia que causa grave daño) for trafficking purposes but protects private personal use from criminal prosecution.
PT Portugal Decriminalized
Decriminalized for personal use under the 2001 reform.
Portugal's personal-use threshold for LSD is 1 mg (approximately 10 standard doses).
IT Italy Decriminalized
Tabella I substance. Personal use is an administrative offense.
Italy places LSD in Tabella I but maintains administrative-only sanctions for personal use â no criminal record from personal possession alone.
CZ Czech Republic Decriminalized
Small amounts for personal use are a misdemeanor.
Czech law defines the personal-use threshold for LSD as 5 individual "paper trips" (blotters). Above this it becomes a criminal offense.
CO Colombia Decriminalized
Personal dose decriminalized.
Colombia's blanket constitutional protection of personal drug use (Sentencia C-221/94) applies to LSD.
